The Point Dume compound features private beach frontage and a train caboose converted into a guest retreat.
Actor David Duchovny, a best-known for his appearance in the long-running science fiction series The X-Files, has sold his Malibu, California home for $10.98 million.
The 64-year-old actor, who also worked on Californication, said goodbye to the Point Dume home that he built for himself and his loved ones, intended for convenient indoor-outdoor living. He sold the property with Compass Real Estate’s Chris Cortazzo, who also represented the buyer.
According to Cortazzo, Duchovny’s two children « outgrew the house. » The actor is staying in Southern California but has not made a new choice. The house, which was listed for sale last April, sold $1.6 million lower than the original listing price, according to public records.
« More activity in Malibu is being seen, » Cortazzo said. « The Pacific Coast Highway reopened, and the city center is intact. » The highway reopened last month after January wildfires closed it in Pacific Palisades.
The identity of the buyer wasn’t shown in public records, but Cortazzo described their appeal to the Point Dume lifestyle, private beach access through the home, and the proximity to strong local schools.
« Malibu offers a health-conscious lifestyle, » he added. The architecture and single-story concept of the house were also what appealed to the buyer, according to Cortazzo, who says it is in high demand.
The buyer bought the lot and the original house in 2016 for $4.75 million and used $7 million to construct the existing house with architect Michael Kovach. The completed house is 3,580 square feet, three bedrooms, and was completed in 2021.
A quirky flourish: a found train car on the property Duchovny used as an intimate guest room off the main house, with a cozy wood-paneled sleeping and living space, a small kitchen, and a dining alcove. The actor used it as an artist’s retreat to write his book and record his podcast, a Wall Street Journal profile that ran when the house was listed reported.
« It’s one of the things I’m most proud I’ve created in my life, » Duchovny told the Journal in an interview.
« My favorite room always has been the great room, » he told the release about the sale. « In New York, everything is enclosed more, so I enjoyed the open floor plan and sunlight here, » said the actor, who relocated from New York after many years of residence.
A representative for Duchovny did not return a call for comment.
The house’s great room is topped by polished cement floors and soaring ceilings, with clerestory windows and floor-to-ceiling pivoting glass doors that allow natural light to pour in. A wall of glass doors swing open fully to blend the inside with the green backyard, the listing description states.
The interior style—modern with vintage and bohemian accents—was designed by designer Vanessa Alexander.
The master suite features a double-vanity bathroom with freestanding soaking tub and steam shower. The room opens out onto the outdoors, which has a pool, hot tub, cold plunge, sunken fire pit, and full outdoor kitchen.
A freestanding building beside the pool is a combined office and gym space.
