7 Easy Ways to Keep Roses Fresh Longer in a Vase

These tips for making roses last longer will delay drooping stems and browning petals.

Roses make a beautiful solo statement or a colorful part of an arrangement. But when not cared for properly, the beautiful flowers can quickly go from perky to sad. To extend the life of your rose arrangement, follow these simple tips below—and learn which common home remedies you can skip.

1. Prep Your Vase
Cleanliness matters: start with a thoroughly washed vase free from any old residue or bacteria. A germ-free vessel helps prevent bacterial growth and keeps water clear for longer.

2. Trim Your Stems
Trim rose stems at a 45° angle to provide greater surface area for water absorption. Use sharp, clean scissors or floral snips. Cut off any leaves that would be under the waterline to prevent rot—but not the thorns if possible; removing thorns damages the stem.

3. Use Room‑Temperature Water and Flower Food
Warm or cold water can shock roses—room temperature is best. Include the flower food packet that they provide, typically sugar (to feed the blooms), citric acid (to prevent bacteria), and a mild disinfectant. Mix well before placing the roses in the vase. No flower food? As an alternative, a small amount of mouthwash can reduce bacteria.

4. Refrigerate Overnight
Chill roses to make them last. Place the vase in your fridge overnight (above freezing) to slow down the aging process of the flowers. Remove in the morning—they’ll perk up nicely.

5. Change the Water Regularly
Every 2–3 days—or sooner if the water gets cloudy—remove all the water and replace with fresh flower food. Re‑cut stems each time to allow them to continue taking up water properly.

6. Out of Direct Sunlight and Draughts
Keep the roses out of direct sunlight, which dehydrates them, and away from vents or cold drafts that stress them. Roses adore sun outdoors, but cut flowers prefer constant, moderate room temperatures.

7. Keep Roses Away from Apples and Bananas
These fruits—and even wilted roses—give off ethylene gas, which accelerates aging in flowers. Place your vase away from fruit bowls, and remove any wilted blooms right away to prevent the others from wilting prematurely.

Skip These Myths
You can be told to place aspirin, vodka, or a penny in the vase—but there’s no solid evidence they accomplish much. What really works best to keep your rose arrangement fresh is rock-solid: clean vase, diagonal cuts on the stems, fresh water with flower food, and a little night cooling. That’s what actually keeps your roses longer and makes them look fabulous.
